During my time as Head of Design and Content at sports volunteering charity Join In we tackled many different types of projects, but even this was a first. We conducted research into the true value of volunteering in local sport with partner organisations and produced the following report.
The launch in Whitehall was MC’d by Jonathon Edwards and presented by Join In Director of Strategy and Communications, Will Watt. Guest speakers included former cabinet secretary Gus O’Donnell, Join In Chair Lord Allen and Minister for Civil Society, Rob Wilson MP.
The report revealed the true social value of volunteers at more than £16,000 per year, when taking into account the wellbeing accrued not only by the volunteer but to the wider community they are part of. When multiplied across the 3.2m sports volunteers in the UK, the social value was shown to be £53bn, more than the size of the energy sector.
